The inclusion of a swimming pool was to play a central role in the new garden design, providing the stage for contemporary design details that give the space interest with unique twists on common features. These include a timber feature wall behind the sun bathing area, a polished concrete block that runs into the swimming pool and a mosaic tiled feature wall that adds glamour and style to the garden. It was also important to coordinate the pool and landscape design with the architectural qualities of the house. The existing residence is an Edwardian style home with an extensive modern renovation that opens the rear of the house up to the garden. An existing patio extends the interior living spaces outdoors, and the swimming pool is elevated to one step below patio height to deal with the level changes that exist on the block. While countering the level issue, raising the pool also brings it into closer context with the house creating view lines across the water that can be enjoyed from the kitchen (the hub of the home) and the interior living spaces. The design integrates outdoor living with entertaining; swimming with relaxation; combining the elements together through repetition of materials, skilful planting design and careful manipulation of space.
